There isn’t a more suitable city in the world to host the Venice Architecture Biennale 2018, which will open its doors from May 26 to November 25, than Venice. This year, the 71 participants have been invited to express their idea of “Freespace”.
As usual, the most awaited event of the year will be hosted in two main venues: Arsenale and Giardini.
Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara are the two curators of the Venice Architecture Biennale 2018, and their main task is to find the best way to “describes a generosity of spirit and a sense of humanity at the core of architecture’s agenda.”
This is the year where architecture comes back on stage, with a purpose: promoting the “desire” of architecture itself, as President Baratta said during an interview.
The main concept is the idea of space, with specific attention to the usage of free and public space.
The two Irish curators, in fact, said that “we hope that the word FREESPACE allows us to burrow into the aspirations, ambitions, and generosity of architecture”.
The Exhibition will also see the participation of 63 National Participations in the historic Pavilions at the Giardini, the Arsenale and all around Venice. Among these participants, there are 6 new countries which will show their projects this year: Antigua & Barbuda, Saudi Arabia, Guatemala, Lebanon, Pakistan and the Holy See.
As we said, the majority of the national pavilions will be located at the Giardini and Arsenale, but a lot of free collateral pavilions will be also hosted inside ancient Venetian palaces, situated in different parts of the city. Palazzo Soranzo Van Axel is one of these, and it’s just 6 minutes from our hotel, close to one of the most beautiful churches in Venice: the Madonna dei Miracoli.
